Amy Burt

Amy Burt is hand embroidery artist & tutor. She is based in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex.

She was introduced to the world hand embroidery by her Grandma at the age of 5; whilst living in Berlin, Germany (2007 - 2013) she rediscovered her childhood passion and began to make and sell handmade leather craft.

After returning to the UK in 2014 she was accepted as one of three students on the Royal School of Needlework’s ‘Future Tutors Programme’ based at Hampton Court Palace, South West of London.. The 3 year full-time tutor training course in hand embroidery, trains future RSN tutors in over 25 different hand embroidery techniques. There are under 40 RSN tutors around the world.

Amy graduated with Merit in July 2017 and now works as a full-time embroiderer. Since 2018 she has taken great pride in being one of the 2 tutors teaching Technical Hand Embroidery for the RSN’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Hand Embroidery, partnered with the University of Creative Arts.  As well as teaching for the RSN she teaches regular embroidery courses at East Sussex College, Hastings and online for the Creative Dimensions Trust.

Amy also works as a freelance embroiderer in the fashion industry; she regularly freelances for Alexander McQueen and worked for over 4 years as a Senior Embroiderer at the British Haute Couture fashion house Ralph & Russo.

Her work also includes private commissions for collectors and independent fashion designers.

In 2018, Amy’s embroidery of ‘The Young Stevie Nicks’ was chosen from over 20,000 pieces of art to be displayed in the world famous Royal Academy of Arts 250th Summer Exhibition, curated by Grayson Perry RA. Amy’s work hung alongside 1,350 works of art including pieces by Banksy, Tracy Emin and David Hockney. It was hung in the main ‘yellow’ gallery,  personally selected by Grayson Perry.
